The Smoking Fetish

“Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” To quote Freud, who seemed to see a penis or other sexual reference in just about everything. But to people who cultured the smoking fetish, a cigar is indeed a very sexually-charged object.

The smoking fetish is not a very well-known fetish, so much so that it even lacks the fancy names borne by many of the other paraphilias out there. In fact, this particular practice didn’t gain much recognition of even being a proper fetish until the existence of the Internet enabled the availability of Web sites and newsgroups geared toward swapping pictures and stories of sexy smokers.

But evidence does suggest that individuals have ogled over the gals in old cigarette ads and began relating smoking to sexual pleasures long before alt.sex.fetish.smokers came along. It’s not difficult to make the connection between enjoying a cigarette or cigar and sexual activity, even despite the phallic form of many common smoking devices. It could be the slow inhalation followed by a satisfied exhalation, mimicking breathing during sex.

Other smoke fetishists claim to be aroused by the smoke itself that frames the smoker, forming a picturesque image that they find highly erotic. And of course, there are those who appreciate the talents of French-inhalers and those who blow perfect smoke rings.

It could be argued that Hollywood played a large role in cultivating the smoking fetish, with glamorous images of Marlene Dietrich, James Dean and Betty Davis posing seductively with their cigarettes. And who can forget those box-toting gals with the short skirts and red lips who always had a light ready?

Nowadays, with the rise of anti-tobacco campaigns barking out their messages of impending death to those who smoke, the fetish also has taken on a much darker side. Among smoking fetishists, we now also find those who are aroused not by the act of a woman (or in some cases, a man) smoking, but rather the thought that smokers are harming themselves. Yes, these are the people who masturbate to the x-ray photos often found in anti-smoking pamphlets.

Because smoking has become less socially accepted, it has begun to take on a taboo fringe that some people find highly erotic.
